42 Commando Royal Marines
Racing in Car 44
In 2011, fourteen years after first joining the Royal Marines, Major Steve McCulley was nearly killed by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) while leading 175 Royal Marines in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
Miraculously, he survived. However, the resultant injuries were so serious that he lay in a coma for three weeks. A gruelling two-year physical rehabilitation programme followed but his military career was over.
Having served in Commando Units during operational tours to Northern Ireland, the Balkans, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan, Major McCulley was no stranger to adversity. So, facing a future away from the Royal Marines, he sought solace in another long-held passion of his – motorsport.
An introduction to Mission Motorsport, the forces’ motorsport charity, saw Steve selected to race in the 2014 Caterham Academy – a competition exclusively for drivers with no previous race experience. Incredibly, Steve finished fourth in the end of the season standings.
In 2017 – just four years since his first race and with over twenty-five podium finishes – Steve came third overall in Caterham Racing’s top tier, the ‘Seven 310R Championship’. He has also driven in the Lotus Cup and his team has twice won their class at the Race of Remembrance.
Simply, motorsport was Steve’s light at the end of the tunnel. His enthusiasm has not only seen him become a talented driver, but also a fully qualified racing instructor. Away from the track, he enjoys ferrying his children to their various after school clubs and spending time with his girlfriend Hayley, a Health and Wellbeing Coach.
As part of the new Invictus Games Racing team, Steve will race the season alongside professional driver Matthew George.
Steve has been selected and trained for the 2019 British GT season by Mission Motorsport who will be closely following his progress and supporting him throughout the season.
